How the PIN finder works

  1. Your location stays with you

The check runs in your browser. We only send it the post office list for your area.

  2. Nearby points vote

The post offices and mapped addresses closest to you vote for their PIN; closer ones count more.

  3. Your PIN and the others nearby

We show the most likely PIN, the other PINs around you and the nearest post offices with directions.

Questions

How do I find the PIN code of my current location?

Tap Find my PIN code above and allow location when your browser asks. The page compares your position with India Post's post offices and mapped addresses, then shows the most likely PIN, the other PINs around you and the nearest post offices.

Is the answer always right?

Usually, but not always. A PIN code covers a delivery area, and two areas can meet in the middle of a street. That's why we also show the other PINs near you with their area names: pick the one that matches your address. For anything important, confirm with your post office.

What do the 6 digits of a PIN code mean?

The first digit is the zone (for example 5 for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka), the first two the postal circle, the first three the sorting district, and the last three the delivery post office. Every PIN page here explains its own digits.

What is the difference between a PIN code and a DIGIPIN?

A PIN code covers a whole delivery area of many streets. A DIGIPIN is India Post's newer 10-character code for an exact spot about 4 metres wide.

Where does the data come from?

India Post's All India Pincode Directory and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj's Local Government Directory, both on data.gov.in under the Government Open Data License, plus addresses mapped on OpenStreetMap. See data sources & method.
